In the late 1990's a company called Goto.com was formed. It was based on the premise that businesses would pay for control over their listings on a search engine. at first the idea seemed preposterous to web site owners. Pay for web hosting services and search engine placement?
There was considerable resistance to that idea. If you have to pay for hosting services on the web and search engine placement, what would happen to the company budget?
The rationale suddenly changed. As paid inclusion services became more popular, paid inclusion found its way into the advertising area of a businesses budget. No longer was web hosting and other web hosting services the only factor in the company budget.
Companies now had to calculate the cost of a "click" versus the actual profit generated by a "click". For many companies this is a tricky calculation to have to make. Along with web design services, they also had to calculate "clicks".
Other companies were simply looking for a web presence and the cost of "pay per click" was not a factor. For companies that needed the "clicks", cost became an important consideration. Web hosting services became less of a factor than the pay per click for the companies that needed internet "visibility".
Besides a web hosting service, which is always required, companies had to choose which "paid inclusion" service they were going to use. The fact is that since Goto.com began their service, other vendors and search engines decided that paid inclusion was important to them.
With the "dot com" crash, a new reality immerged. Search engines such as Alta Vista were no longer the cash cows that they used to be. Advertising dollars suddenly vanished. What to do? Charge companies doing business on the web for a competitive position in their search engine.
Such a service was perhaps the only way that some of the search engines could survive on the web. Hosting numerous sites that would pay made a difference in a search engines bottom line.
What about the bottom line of the companies that had to pay? The web site design had to lend itself to search engine optimization. Even companies that were in the adult web hosting business had to consider search engine optimization.
