How do we evaluate these Web host companies?

We began our evaluation by opening an account with a Web hosting company using a credit card -- just as anyone would.
When the Web site we set up became available, we created a couple of Web pages using any available wizard and then uploaded these pages. When possible, we tagged a visitor counter and search engine onto each site using scripts either available or recommended on the site. Along the way, we noted the services and examined the management capabilities of each service. A few days later, we added a shopping cart to each site. If the service required it, we upgraded our account to an e-business category, such as a store package. In some cases, this necessitated rebuilding the store within the site's e-commerce application.
Then, we requested technical support and asked questions for both sales department and technical support staff. We report and rate every single response.
In our reviews, we paid attention to three categories of potential business users:

Novices;
Professional site developers; and
Technical professionals who have no Web site design experience.

We also tried to delve into the infrastructure behind the services. We traced routes to servers,
and talked to representatives of each service to double-check our findings. We also factored in the size and power of the resources available through each service.
