Before digging into your project, it's critical to have a clear sense of Your Web site's purpose. Once you've defined the mission, it's much easier to make judicious use of Flash, Shockwave, Java scripts, pop-up windows or applets. If you start with a clear mission, your decisions will be based on your users' identified needs, rather than knee-jerk attempts to use all that's available.

We ask clients a battery of questions like what is the mission of the organization, how does the Web site support that mission, what are the short-term and the long-term goals, what are the main tasks the user is going to perform in the site," says Heidi Shon, a senior implementor with Thaumaturgix, Inc., a New York based Web development company.

Jarin Tabata, who runs a London design company called Sinisnap that creates sites for record companies, photographers and art galleries, stresses the importance of getting client input before the design process even begins.

"The size of the company, the amount of anticipated traffic and the demographics of their target audience are the determining factors for what they're going to need. It's important to establish all that in the beginning, before the design is started," he says.
